MOTIS GROUP CARBON REDUCTION PLAN

1. Aims

At Motis we have set ourselves a target to reduce carbon emissions from our operations by 100% over a 30 year period by 2050.

In 2020, which is our baseline, our total carbon footprint was 359.06 tonnes of CO2.

We have calculated this figure based predominantly on our Scope 1 & 2 emissions such as our company facilities, fuel combustion and fuel purchased as well as company vehicles. We have also included several Scope 3 emissions which includes business travel.

2. Reducing energy used in the operation of buildings

We are taking the following actions to reduce the amount of carbon-sourced energy used to run our premises:

  • setting objectives for a reduction in our carbon emissions and regularly reviewing our progress
  • undertaking regular energy audits via third-party professional consultants
  • raising the awareness of employees on energy conservation matters and welcoming their feedback and suggestions
  • installing additional insulation wherever possible
  • draught proofing of windows and exterior doors
  • upgrading single glazing to double glazed units
  • installing photo-voltaic panels
  • replacing all of our lighting to LED and upgrading lighting controls
  • replacing old boilers/machinery/refrigerators with more energy efficient models
  • purchasing energy supplies and other utilities with regard to both economic cost and the environmental impact of the supplier
  • evaluating the energy rating of a new premises as a key criterion
  • having energy consumption data available for all buildings
  • reviewing routine maintenance, including major replacements against an energy efficiency checklist to ensure that opportunities to switch fuels, install controls or improve thermal standards, etc. are taken
  • ensuring equipment purchasing policies consider energy consumption for the purchase of all items of equipment and are fully compliant with current best practice
  • considering new technologies such as renewable energy, high efficiency motors, etc. where appropriate.
  • Upgrading water taps to ones with sensors within the communal washrooms to reduce water wastage

3. Reducing energy used for travel

We are taking the following actions to reduce carbon emissions associated with business travel:

  • raising employee awareness of energy conservation matters and welcoming their feedback and suggestions
  • increasing the use of telephone and video conferencing
  • reducing the number of ‘high mileage’ meetings
  • using technology for remote monitoring
  • upgrading all company vehicles to hybrid fuel models
  • increasing the use of public transport
  • scheduling meetings at locations which are readily accessible by public transport
  • scheduling meetings and events at times which are convenient for those using public transport

4. Reducing the energy impact of our products, services and business activities

We are taking the following actions to reduce carbon emissions arising from our products, services and business activities:

  • raising employee awareness of energy conservation matters and welcoming their feedback and suggestions
  • including sustainability and the consideration of carbon impact in our procurement process
  • reducing waste
  • reducing the use of treated water
  • actively seeking ways that waste can be re-used
  • recycling waste
  • sourcing products which use recycled materials and are recyclable so far as reasonably practicable
  • engaging with our customers to find sustainable strategies for the future

5. Funding

The vast majority of our plan will be self-funded through re-invested profits, however, we will look to identify any government funded incentives where possible.

6. Implementation

Our Directors; Patrick Hutley, David McComb, Paul King & Chris Polwart are responsible for ensuring that this plan is implemented.

Our Infrastructure Project Manager; Jamie Hennessy is responsible for day-to-day co-ordination of the carbon reduction strategy.

All staff and contractors are jointly responsible for implementing energy-saving procedures. We will ensure that staff are made aware of our strategy at recruitment and provide regular updates and awareness campaigns throughout the year. Staff will be encouraged to make suggestions to reduce our carbon emissions and we welcome all staff feedback.

Managers will supervise to ensure that our policy and procedures for energy management are effectively implemented.

7. Measurement, reporting and monitoring

We use government approved calculators as a tool for measuring our carbon footprint.

Jamie Hennessy is responsible for producing a report on an annual basis which will be submitted to the Directors. The report will summarise the carbon emissions to date since the baseline date, review progress made towards our target, identify whether or not we are on target to meet our goal, highlight any new challenges and describe the action required to meet our plan going forward.
